Successful Flex Fund Emergency Appeal

The MDHA Flex Fund pays for minor but impactful expenditures that help folks end their homelessness. Since the time we established the Flex Fund, back in 2015, the need has gone up and gone down. In the last six-seven months the need has accelerated beyond what we have ever experienced. At the same time, a few funding sources we were counting on, either did not come through or shifted their funding schedules.

This is why, on May 30, 2019, we had to issue our first ever Flex Fund emergency appeal to raise $15,000 by the end of June 2019.

 So, how did we do?

  • We received a few individual donations immediately. Thank you to all our friends who chipped in.
  • We received a $60,000 grant from the Carl B. and Florence E. King Foundation making the foundation the number one funder of the Flex Fund over the life of the Fund!
  • United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, who co-founded the Flex Fund with us, approved us for the Flex Fund’s first multi-year grant. They will be giving us $20,000 a year, over the course of the next three years.

So, by the end of June, we not only met our emergency appeal goal; we smashed right through it! But (as they say in infomercials) wait; there’s more!

  • July may have just begun, but we already received our first ever grant from the Perot Foundation. They granted the Flex Fund $65,000. (Our sincere condolences to the Perot Family on the passing of Mr. H. Ross Perot.)
  • Yesterday, we received news from the USAA Foundation, that they will be granting us $12,000 for the Flex Fund, to be used exclusively for veterans.
  • This USAA grant will allow us to unlock a challenge grant of an additional $9,000 (from an anonymous foundation) for the MDHA Flex Fund, to be used exclusively for veterans. Thank you, USAA!

Keep in mind, that we estimate that we will need about $222,000 to meet all of the Flex Fund needs, over the course of the next 12 months, so we, literally, can’t afford to slow down. If you want to contribute to the Flex Fund, just click on the Donate button on Our Wall of Champions page, to take you to the donation form. Remember to write the words “Flex Fund” in the memo section of the form.
